Dropped your phone in the pool, got caught in the rain, or just had it too close to the shower? Modern phones are usually water-resistant enough to survive, but water can still get trapped inside the speaker grille — and that’s when the sound turns muffled, quiet, or crackly.
Here’s how to deal with it, safely.
1. Don’t plug in a charger or headphones yet
If your speaker still sounds wet, avoid plugging anything into the charging port or headphone jack until it’s fully dry. Most modern phones will actually warn you about liquid detection — listen to that warning.
2. Tap it dry first
Turn your phone screen-side down and gently tap it against your palm a few times. This alone gets rid of a surprising amount of trapped water.
3. Use sound to push the rest out
This is the trick that actually works best: play a low-frequency tone through the speaker while the phone is facing down. The vibration physically pushes water droplets out of the speaker mesh, the same way some smartwatches do it automatically after swim tracking.

4. Let it air dry

What NOT to do

- Don’t shake the phone violently. It won’t help, and it risks other internal damage.
If your speaker is still muffled after several cleaning cycles and a full day of drying, there may be actual water damage rather than just trapped moisture — at that point it’s worth getting it checked out.
