How to Test a Phone Speaker for Rattle, Distortion, and Damage
“My speaker sounds bad” covers a lot of very different problems. Dust in the mesh, water still sitting behind the driver, a volume limit you forgot you set, a case covering the port, and an actually damaged driver all sound roughly the same from the couch — but only one of them needs a repair shop.
The good news is that you can tell them apart in about five minutes with nothing but sound.
First, rule out the boring causes
Do these before any real testing, because they explain more “broken speakers” than damage does:
- Take the case off. Thick cases and screen protectors routinely sit over the bottom speaker grille or the earpiece slot and cut volume noticeably.
- Check you’re not connected to something. Bluetooth speakers in another room, a car system, or forgotten earbuds in a bag will happily steal your audio while the phone shows full volume.
- Check the volume limiter. iPhone has a Reduce Loud Sounds setting under Sounds & Haptics, and Android has a similar media volume limit. Both quietly cap output.
- Look at the grille in good light. Pocket lint compacts into speaker mesh over months and muffles it exactly the way water does.
If the sound is still wrong after that, start testing.
Test 1: the sweep
A frequency sweep plays a tone that climbs smoothly from low to high. It is the single most useful speaker test there is, because a healthy speaker produces a continuous, even sound as it climbs, and a damaged or obstructed one does not.
Play a sweep at moderate volume and listen for:
- A buzz or rattle at particular frequencies. A rattle that appears at, say, 200 Hz and disappears again at 400 Hz is mechanical — something is vibrating against something else. That is usually debris in the grille or a loose part, not a dead driver.
- A section that goes silent or drops sharply. A genuine gap in the sweep points at driver damage.
- A wet, gargling quality at the low end. That is water, and it is fixable.
Test 2: fixed tones, one at a time
Sweeps tell you where a problem lives. Fixed tones let you sit on that spot and confirm it.
Play a steady tone at the frequency where the sweep sounded wrong, then gently press around the edges of the phone near the speaker. If the buzz changes as you press, it is a physical obstruction or a loose component, not the driver itself.
While you’re there, a couple of tones are worth knowing:
- Around 100–200 Hz — the bass region. Phone speakers are physically too small to produce much here, so a little distortion at high volume is normal, not a fault.
- Around 1 kHz — the region your ear is most sensitive to. This should sound clean and effortless. Distortion here is a real signal.
- Above 10 kHz — treble. If this sounds dull compared to another phone, either the mesh is clogged or you’re older than you’d like to be. Both are common.
Test 3: real audio, both speakers
Modern phones have two speakers — the main one on the bottom edge and the earpiece, which doubles as a stereo channel. A fault often affects only one.
Play a track you know well, then cover the bottom speaker with a finger and listen to the earpiece alone. Swap. If one side is obviously duller or quieter, you’ve isolated the problem to that driver, which is worth knowing before you describe it to anyone at a repair counter.
What the results actually mean
Rattle that moves with pressure, or that appears only in one frequency band — almost always debris or moisture. Clean the grille with a soft dry brush and run a cleaning cycle.
Muffled but otherwise clean sound — usually water or compacted lint. Face the phone down, run a cleaning cycle a few times, and give it a few hours.
Distortion that gets worse the louder you go, but sounds fine quiet — you may just be pushing a small speaker past what it can do. Try the same test at half volume before worrying.
A dead band in the sweep, or crackling at every volume and every frequency — this is the one that suggests real driver damage. Sound won’t fix it.
Do the test again afterwards
The reason to run the sweep before cleaning is so you have something to compare against. Run the identical test after, and you’ll know whether you actually improved anything, rather than guessing based on how a song feels.
