What each test tells you
The channel tests play pink noise from one side at a time. What you are listening for is not whether sound comes out but whether the two sides match: same loudness, same character, no buzz on one and not the other. Differences that are obvious this way are almost impossible to notice with music.
The stereo check runs left, then right, then both. It catches the two classic wiring mistakes — channels swapped, and one channel feeding both speakers — which otherwise go unnoticed for years.
The sweep climbs from 40 Hz to 16 kHz over twelve seconds. A healthy speaker gets quieter at the extremes but stays smooth. A buzz that appears at one pitch and vanishes again means something is physically loose at that frequency.
Reading the results honestly
A phone speaker will fail this test in ways that are completely normal. There is no bass below about 300 Hz, the top gives out around 15 kHz, and one speaker on a modern phone is often deliberately quieter than the other — many phones use the earpiece as the second stereo channel, and it is smaller. Compare a phone against another phone, not against studio monitors.
When a bad result is a cleaning problem
Muffled, quiet or crackly output from one speaker is the signature of something in the way rather than something broken — water after a splash, or lint packed into the grille. Water responds to the eject tone. Dust responds to a soft brush and patience. An actually blown speaker sounds distorted at every volume, on every frequency, and no amount of cleaning changes it.
Questions
How do I know which speaker is broken?
Play the left channel on its own, then the right. A working pair produces the same even hiss at the same loudness from each side. If one is silent, quieter, or buzzy, that is the one with the problem — and if the sound comes from the wrong side, your channels are wired or configured backwards rather than broken.
Why use noise instead of music to test a speaker?
Music is uneven. A track can be almost entirely in one channel, or have nothing in the bass, so it hides faults. Pink noise contains every frequency at once at a steady level, which makes a missing range or an imbalance between sides obvious immediately.
My speaker buzzes at one particular pitch. What does that mean?
Something is loose or torn. Run the sweep and note the frequency where it starts — a buzz over a narrow band usually means a damaged cone or a rattling part of the case, while distortion across the whole range points to a blown driver or an amplifier being pushed too hard. On a phone, a rattle at one pitch is very often a case, a screen protector or debris in the grille rather than the speaker itself.
The sound stops partway through the sweep. Is that a fault?
Usually not. Small speakers simply stop reproducing above roughly 15 kHz, and human hearing runs out somewhere in the same region. It only indicates a problem if one channel dies noticeably earlier than the other, or if the sound disappears well down in the midrange.
Can this test fix a muffled speaker?
No — it only diagnoses. If the sound is muffled after contact with water, the water eject tone is the tool that tries to clear it.
