Water Eject Sound

Turn your volume all the way up first

This only works at high volume — the speaker has to move as far as it can. Take headphones off, and hold the phone with the speaker pointing down so gravity helps.

While it runs

  1. 1. Hold the phone speaker down, or on its side with the speaker facing the floor.
  2. 2. Shake it gently downward every few seconds.
  3. 3. Wipe away the water that appears at the grille with a soft cloth.
  4. 4. Run it again if the sound has improved but is not back to normal.

Why a low tone pushes water out

A speaker makes sound by moving a small cone back and forth. How far it travels depends on two things: the frequency, and the volume. At low frequencies the cone makes long, slow excursions — the movement you can feel with a finger on a speaker playing bass. Up in the treble those movements become tiny and fast.

Water trapped in a speaker grille is held there by surface tension, and it takes a physical shove to break it loose. A long, slow, forceful cone movement is exactly that shove. Play that same speaker something high and quiet and the water will sit there all day.

This is not folk wisdom, incidentally: it is the same principle behind the water-eject feature built into the Apple Watch, which plays a series of low tones to clear its own speaker port after a swim.

Which programme to use

  • Standard (165 Hz). Start here. Steady, and effective on most phones.
  • Pulsed. The same tone switched on and off twice a second. The repeated push often shifts a drop that a steady tone cannot.
  • Deep (145 Hz). Lower and heavier. Worth trying on larger speakers, or when 165 Hz sounds thin on your phone.
  • Sweep (100–200 Hz). Cycles through the whole useful range. Every speaker has a frequency it moves most at, and a sweep finds yours without you having to guess.

What not to do

No heat. Hairdryers, radiators and ovens warp adhesive and damage batteries long before they dry a speaker. No rice. It absorbs nothing useful from inside a sealed phone, and rice dust in a port causes its own problems.No compressed air into the grille — that pushes water further in, which is the opposite of the goal. Sound, gravity and patience are the whole toolkit.

If the sound is muffled but there was no water

Then it is probably dust and lint packed into the mesh rather than water, and a tone will not shift it. That is a different problem with a different fix — soft brush, a dry toothbrush, and time. We wrote about telling the two apart inwhy your speaker is quiet when it is not water damage.

Questions

Does the water eject sound actually work?

Yes, for water sitting in or just behind the speaker grille, which is the usual case after a splash, a pool or a rainy walk. A low tone drives the speaker cone through its widest movement, and that movement pushes droplets out through the mesh. It cannot reach water that has gone deeper into the phone, and it does nothing for corrosion once that has started.

What frequency removes water from a speaker?

Somewhere between roughly 100 Hz and 200 Hz, and 165 Hz is the usual choice — that is the range where a small phone driver moves the most air for a given signal. The four programmes here all sit in that band: a steady 165 Hz, a pulsed 165 Hz, a deeper 145 Hz, and a sweep that cycles between 100 and 200 Hz so it passes through whatever your particular speaker responds to best.

Why does it need to be so loud?

Because the force pushing the water out is the movement of the cone, and how far the cone moves depends on volume. At half volume there is often not enough movement to break the water's surface tension. Set the phone to maximum, disconnect any headphones, and hold the speaker facing down.

Can this damage my speaker?

Running a loud low tone for thirty seconds at a time is well within what a phone speaker is built to handle — it is quieter and gentler than most music. What does cause damage is heat: never use a hairdryer, a heat gun, or an oven on a phone. Rice does nothing either; it is a myth that survives because phones often dry out on their own given a day.

My sound is still muffled afterwards. Now what?

Run it two or three more times, tapping the phone gently against your palm with the speaker facing down between runs. If it has not improved after that, leave the phone somewhere dry and airy for 24–48 hours and try again — some water needs time to find its way out. Sound that is still wrong after a couple of days suggests the water reached something beyond the speaker, which is a repair shop question.
